Playbill: Real Housewives Stars Lisa Rinna and Phaedra Parks Head to Neil Simon's Rumors
Reality television is heading to the New York stage. Lisa Rinna, Phaedra Parks, Stacey Rusch and Dolores Catania will star in an Off Broadway revival of Neil Simon's farce Rumors, Playbill reported on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
The production will feature two entirely separate casts drawn from Real Housewives alumni, according to Playbill. Deadline, Variety, People and The Hollywood Reporter carried the casting news the same day.
A Farce Meets a Franchise
Rumors first premiered in 1988. The comedy follows wealthy couples who arrive at the tenth wedding anniversary party of New York City Deputy Mayor Charley Brock, only to find that his wife is missing, and who then scramble to cover up what has happened.
Simon's play runs on secrets, gossip and people trying to manage how things look in front of others. That makes the casting idea easy to understand. The Real Housewives franchise has built years of television on the same raw materials.
Director Zhailon Levingston, a Tony winner known for Cats: The Jellicle Ball, addressed that overlap in a statement quoted by Playbill. He said the production would not change a single word of Simon's text, and that he hoped to reveal "the delicious chaos that unfolds when private lives become public spectacle."
Two Casts, Two Runs
The first cast will play from Jan. 9 through Feb. 28, 2027, Playbill reported. Rinna will play Chris, Parks will play Claire, Rusch will play Cookie and Catania will play Cassie.
A second cast takes over for performances from March 2 through April 21. Cynthia Bailey will play Chris, Eileen Davidson will play Claire, Carole Radziwill will play Cookie and Candiace Dillard Bassett will play Cassie.
The revival is produced by Benson Drive Productions and will play the Newman Mills Theater at the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space in New York. Previews begin Jan. 9, with an official opening set for Jan. 25, according to Playbill.
Casting Still to Come
The announced names cover the four main female roles. Further casting, by Jason Thinger, has yet to be announced, Playbill said. That leaves the male roles in the farce, including the husbands at the party, unfilled for now.
Why Producers Keep Calling Reality Stars
Bringing television personalities to the stage is not a new strategy. Recognizable names can help sell tickets for a limited run, especially Off Broadway, where productions often need a strong hook to stand out.
Rinna has acting credits that stretch back well before her reality years, including daytime television. Davidson also built a long career in soap operas before joining the franchise. Deadline described the revival as an Off Broadway debut for all eight performers. Comedy timing on a live stage is a different skill from reacting on camera, and the reviews will show how that experiment lands.
Splitting the run between two casts also gives the producers two separate waves of publicity. Fans of different cities and seasons of the franchise each get their own reason to buy a ticket. It also lets more of the franchise's well known faces share in a single project without crowding one stage.
What Has Been Confirmed
The facts on record are the play, the theater, the director, the eight announced performers and the dates. Ticket sales have also been outlined. Playbill reported that a presale through TodayTix begins Oct. 29, with general sales opening Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. Eastern, and that American Express members can already buy through the production's website.
What has not been announced is the rest of the cast or any plans beyond the April 21 closing date. Anything beyond that, including talk of an extension or a tour, remains speculation until the producers say otherwise.
