Deadline and Variety: Paramount+ Ends Criminal Minds: Evolution With Season 20

The Behavioral Analysis Unit is closing its last case. Deadline, in a report by Nellie Andreeva, and Variety both reported on October 30 that Paramount+ will end Criminal Minds: Evolution with its 20th season, which is set to premiere in 2027.

Production on the final season has already wrapped, according to Deadline. So this is not a show being cut off mid story. The writers knew they were writing an ending, which is more than many long running series get. Plenty of beloved shows have ended without warning.

A Decision Made Under New Leadership

Deadline reports that the move is the first cancellation under Casey Bloys's new leadership, and that it was made on the recommendation of the previous regime. That detail matters, and it is easy to miss. It suggests the call was in motion before the current team took over, rather than a statement of direction from the new one.

It is also not a ratings rescue gone wrong. Deadline notes the series is still in the Paramount+ Top 10. A show that is still drawing viewers being brought to a close tells you that streaming math is about more than whether people are watching. Cost, age and long term strategy all weigh in, even if the platforms rarely spell out how.

Twenty Seasons Across Two Homes

The franchise's history is unusual. The original Criminal Minds ran for 15 seasons on CBS before ending. It was later revived on Paramount+ as Criminal Minds: Evolution, which counts its seasons as a continuation of the original run. With Season 20, that makes five seasons on streaming on top of the 15 on broadcast.

Deadline reports that 20 seasons puts the show in a tie for No. 5 among the longest running dramas. For a procedural built around profilers hunting serial offenders, that is a remarkable record, and it says a lot about how durable the format proved to be.

The Team Heading Into the Final Season

The cast that carried the revival includes Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez, Paget Brewster and RJ Hatanaka. Several of them have been with the franchise for most of its life, which gives the final episodes a built in sense of history.

Showrunner Erica Messer, who has guided the series through much of its run, issued a statement about the ending, according to Deadline. Fans who want to read her full comments can find them in the original report.

What Fans Should Expect

The announcement also closes the door on speculation that the revival might run indefinitely. For a franchise that has already returned once, the word final carries extra weight, and fans have learned not to take any ending for granted in this business.

There is no exact premiere date yet, only the 2027 window. That leaves a long wait between the announcement and the farewell, which is not unusual for streaming schedules but will test the patience of loyal viewers.

The upside is that the creative team had time to plan. Because filming wrapped this fall with the knowledge that it was the end, the season can be built as a proper conclusion rather than a cliffhanger left hanging. Whether that means closure for the core characters or one last major case remains to be seen.

The End of a Television Era

Criminal Minds has outlasted many of the shows that debuted alongside it, survived a cancellation once already and found a second life on streaming. Few procedurals can claim that kind of staying power. Its formula of a tight team, a weekly case and a long running ensemble has been copied many times, but rarely sustained this long.

Season 20 will be the last chapter. Until Paramount+ sets a date, fans can revisit earlier seasons and keep an eye out for official announcements about the final run.
