Air Force Secretary Says United States Has Deployed Weapons in Space

A rare public confirmation from the Pentagon

The secretary of the Air Force said this week that the United States has deployed weapons in space, the first public acknowledgment of American weapons in orbit. The comments came as the Pentagon describes growing competition with Russia and China in the space domain.

Why officials are talking now

Defense officials have warned for years that satellites used for navigation, communications, and missile warning are potential targets. The new statement does not detail systems, locations, or numbers. Analysts said the remark is meant to signal readiness without revealing classified capabilities.

Commercial satellite operators, which now carry a large share of U.S. data traffic, said they are expanding cybersecurity and orbital-debris tracking. Congress is expected to review space-domain funding in the next defense authorization cycle.
