Two of pop's biggest stars have finally released a song together. Olivia Rodrigo released a remix of her album track "expectations" featuring Chappell Roan on Thursday, October 15, 2026, through Interscope Records, with an official music video arriving at the same time. Rolling Stone, Variety and Billboard all covered the release, and Universal Music Canada confirmed the details in its announcement.

According to the label, the remix is Rodrigo's first ever remix and Roan's first ever feature. It was produced by Dan Nigro, the longtime collaborator who has worked with both artists for years. For fans who have watched the two singers cross paths on tour and on festival stages, the collaboration feels like a payoff that was a long time coming.

How the Remix Was Revealed

The rollout moved quickly. Variety reported that rumors of a remix started circulating on Sunday, October 11, after a German retailer briefly put the single on sale and then took it down. The next day, Rodrigo posted a short audio clip to her Instagram story of a voice saying that Olivia does remixes now, which many fans suspected was Roan.

Rodrigo confirmed the news on Tuesday, October 13. Variety reported that she shared a photo of the pair posing on a yellow car with the license plate "XPECT8NS," and Billboard noted that the cover art, shot by Phoenix Johnson, shows the two singers on top of a retro convertible in bold 1980s outfits. Two days later, the song and video were out.

Inside The Big Expectations Show

The video, directed by Bardia Zeinali, imagines Rodrigo and Roan as rival contestants on a retro television game show called "The Big Expectations Show." Universal Music Canada describes it as a tour through nostalgic games inspired by classic game shows of the 1980s and 1990s, and Rolling Stone points to campy riffs on Family Feud.

The cameos are a big part of the fun. Talking Heads frontman David Byrne plays the fictional host, a character Rolling Stone identifies as Johnny Johnson, and Dan Nigro makes an appearance as well. Rolling Stone also reports that Roan adds a new verse and slightly changes the lyrics to reference a mediocre female suitor, giving the remix its own point of view rather than simply layering a second voice over the original.

For collectors, the remix is also available in physical formats, including limited edition 7 inch vinyl, CDs and cassettes sold through both artists' online stores.

Where the Original Song Came From

The original "expectations" is the 12th track on Rodrigo's third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, according to Variety. Billboard reports that the song debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 when the album arrived in June.

The album itself was a major hit. Universal Music Canada says it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 485,000 first week units, the biggest solo debut of 2026, and topped the charts in 17 countries. Rolling Stone notes that it is Rodrigo's third album to debut at Number One, following her 2021 debut Sour and 2024's Guts.

A Friendship Built on the Road

The two singers have a long shared history. Billboard reports that Roan opened shows on Rodrigo's Sour Tour in 2022 and returned as a supporting act on the Guts World Tour two years later. After Roan's own rise to global stardom, she rejoined Rodrigo on the Guts tour in Los Angeles in August 2024, where the two performed Roan's "Hot to Go!" together.

Rodrigo has spoken warmly about the friendship. In an October 2024 interview with Billboard, she said Roan "actually gives me so much advice on taking care of myself and being me in an industry that's so overwhelming sometimes."

Their paths crossed again this summer. Roan performed at Rodrigo's first Daisy Chain Fields festival on August 29, 2026, at Great Park in Irvine, California. Rolling Stone reports that the festival raised $10 million for organizations supporting women and girls, which philanthropist Melinda French Gates then doubled to $20 million.

Why This Pairing Matters

Rodrigo and Roan both came up through the same creative circle around Nigro, and both have built careers on sharp, funny, emotionally direct songwriting. A shared single was always going to draw attention, and turning it into a playful game show spectacle with a rock legend as host gives fans a reason to watch as well as listen.

The "expectations" remix featuring Chappell Roan is streaming now, and the official music video is out as well. Tell us in the comments whether the remix beats the album version, and keep following Hollywood Magazine for more music and entertainment news.
