Netflix Steps Trailer Pairs Ali Wong and Amanda Seyfried in a Cinderella Twist
Cinderella has been retold countless times, but rarely from this angle. Netflix's new animated film Steps hands the story to the stepsisters, and the main trailer, released on Thursday, October 15, 2026, shows just how far the film is willing to bend the fairy tale. Ali Wong and Stephanie Hsu voice the sisters, Amanda Seyfried voices Cinderella, and the film arrives on Netflix on November 20.
The trailer was announced on Netflix Tudum and covered by Cartoon Brew and ComingSoon. Together they paint a picture of a fast, funny adventure with a cast that reads like a wish list for a family comedy.
A Fairy Tale Told From the Other Side
According to Cartoon Brew, Steps follows Lilith (Wong) and Margot (Hsu), two biological sisters who are tired of living in the shadow of their well meaning stepsister, Cinderella. In the original story they are the villains. Here they are the heroes, or at least the people we follow.
Director Alyce Tzue explained the idea to Netflix Tudum. "I wanted to flip the fairy tale that usually focuses on the protagonist who gets the magic, and put that lens on these Asian sisters, who resonated with me, and ask, 'Why didn't they get the magic?'" she said. She added that the story is "about very different sisters realizing that they're more alike than different."
What Happens in the Trailer
ComingSoon reports that the trailer opens with a montage of Cinderella's overwhelming perfection, leaving Lilith and Margot feeling invisible. Fed up, Lilith steals the Fairy Godmother's magic wand, and the sisters use it to crash the Royal Ball.
The plan backfires. A magical accident turns Margot into a frog, and a power hungry schemer named Priscilla, voiced by Nikki Glaser, seizes the chance to take the throne. The usual fairy tale logic breaks down, and the Prince has to get the glass slipper onto Cinderella's foot before midnight or, as the trailer puts it, they are "all toast."
To put things right, Lilith reluctantly teams up with Cinderella and a handsome troll named Gef, voiced by Young Mazino. Cartoon Brew describes the adventure that follows as a chaotic ride involving biker trolls, evil henchmen and the ominously named Screaming Woods.
A Voice Cast Built for Laughs
The supporting cast is one of the film's biggest selling points. Netflix confirms that Daniel Radcliffe plays the Prince, a romantic determined to find true love even as his parents rush him into marriage. Producer Jane Hartwell told Tudum that Radcliffe "plays the Prince in such a charming way that you can believe Cinderella falls in love with him in such a short amount of time."
Peter Dinklage voices Roderick, whom Tudum describes as Priscilla's murderous manny, and WWE Superstar Damian Priest plays Cracktor, a troll overlord. Bette Midler takes on the Fairy Godmother, and she told Tudum that this version of the character "has good intentions, but she's a little bit of a bumbler, and she's a little bit of a schemer."
For fans of Wong and Mazino, the pairing carries an extra spark. Netflix's cast guide notes that both actors appeared in BEEF, so Steps reunites them in a very different kind of story.
Music and the Team Behind It
Steps is directed by Tzue, a Student Academy Award gold medal winner, and John Ripa, co-director of Raya and the Last Dragon. Amy Poehler produces alongside Hartwell and Kim Lessing. Animation World Network reports that it is the first film fully produced in house at Netflix Animation Studios.
The soundtrack features new music from JENNIE of BLACKPINK, Rose Gray, EMEI and Seyfried herself, written and produced by Justin Tranter, according to Tudum. Academy Award winner Kris Bowers composed the score.
Why Steps Could Stand Out
Retellings are everywhere, but Steps has a clear point of view. Producer Kim Lessing told Tudum the team hopes audiences "will come away with the idea that no one is completely good or completely evil." That message, delivered by a cast of seasoned comedians and actors, gives the film a chance to play for children and adults at the same time.
The trailer also suggests the film is not afraid to be silly. A sister turned into a frog, a ticking midnight deadline and a troll biker gang are the kind of set pieces that make for repeat family viewing.
