Energy markets unwind a long-running risk premium

International crude benchmarks fell sharply after reports of a geopolitical ceasefire reduced fears of a prolonged disruption to energy shipping lanes. Traders said the move erased a large share of the risk premium that had been built into prices since earlier this year.

Impact on fuel costs and producers

If the decline holds, motorists and airlines could see lower fuel costs in the coming weeks. Oil-exporting economies, meanwhile, face tighter budgets if prices remain well below recent peaks. Refiners said they are watching inventories and tanker rates before locking in longer-term purchases.

Analysts cautioned that markets can reverse quickly if talks collapse. Shipping insurers have not yet fully restored coverage in every corridor, and several chokepoints remain sensitive to any new incident.
